about

A song about a couple stuck with each other after many years, knowing that most of the fire and warmth has gone but still trying to cling to each other through fear of what else may be out there. It took a long time to write, as I found it a difficult lyric to get to sound just right. The idea was for Kelly and Chris to duet this, but as it was, we wound with two different voices! Gemma had said that she could hear Jacqui Abbot singing this, and while the voice combination might be reminiscent of The Beautiful South, or her subsequent work with Paul Heaton, they hadn’t been in my time at all when writing. The voices in the chorus really blend in this and there’s a cold darkness in the tone of the whole thing. A winter’s tale.

lyrics

North winds come blow, and we shall have snow
Its blanket will cover the night;
Nothing so cold as the ice in a soul locked away.
Where once in your eyes I saw warmth add delight,
I see darkness behind a glass pane;
Nothing left after all of the years I remained.

Holding on when there’s nothing to cling on to
Holding tight when there’s nothing left in you.
Stumbling for something to grasp,
Pray against hope for one day it can last.

When you arrived like a summer’s day,
Like the Milky Way; a patchwork of wonder and light.
Now you sigh, like the morning air, like you’re almost there;
A dream not my real life.

Holding on when there’s nothing to cling on to
Holding tight when there’s nothing left in you.
Stumbling for something to grasp,
Pray against hope for one day it can last.
