Wake Up And Believe! Starting up, starting out; Gold in the soul, hope in your doubt, Looking up, looking in; No better ending for you to begin, baby. Don’t take the path that leads from your road, You gotta find your own way; Take or leave, sink or swim, fight or flight, love or anguish. Getting out, getting free; You’re no fool, you just dare to believe, Stepping through, walking to The thin line no-one else drew for you. Don’t take the path that leads from your road, You gotta find your own way; Take or leave, sink or swim, fight or flight, love or anguish. Don’t see it, wake up and believe, Wake up and believe it’s for you. Don’t see it, wake up and believe, Wake up and believe that it’s true. Making out, making do, Make the most of all you can do. Keep ahead, keep your head, No shame when you’re no longer being lead, baby.

Something keeps me running, something keeps me drawn, Like a force that pulls me ever deeper that I can’t control. There’s madness in this method, I just don’t understand It’s like sinking deep and drowning when I’m on dry land. There’s no explanation, it’s against my reason But I can’t hold this force of nature The answer is there is no answer; No fortune, fate or random chances. I don’t know what any of this means, But technology and faith they hold no key Whatever it is that takes control of me Is what science and religion just don’t see. I can’t control my actions, thinking, feelings anymore, My movements aren’t my own, they make themselves. While I know this flame could burn me deep I can’t help but go to this blinding light, this second sight, This fire within my soul. There’s no explanation, self-reflection Just motivation, proclamation, My answer is to give no answer, Just move to the fates like fortune’s dancer. I don’t know what any of this means, But technology and faith they hold no key Whatever it is that takes control of me Is what science and religion just don’t see. Like a golden dream like I’m seventeen, Like the final shot of the movie scene, Like a golden breath, like I’m out of depth, It’s the biggest hit you’ve ever felt. There’s no explanation, it’s against my reason But I can’t hold this force of nature The answer is there is no answer; No fortune, fate or random chances. I don’t know what any of this means, But technology and faith they hold no key Whatever it is that takes control of me Is what science and religion just don’t see.

Locked on to a guided course; You’re a lifeboat, a rock, a beacon to the ones out lost. A clear tone in sea of noise; You’re the small branch of truth in forest of misinformation. Tied up in a moment’s grace; The look on your face is just enough to spur me on to more. Real hope in your baby blues; The words that you choose raise me hope and make my spirit soar. This love is an open road; no destination to choose, it’s just a journey far beyond the door, Hearts locked in a chosen path; just future no past in a class that we can call our own. Push! Strive! You don’t ascend to survive. You’re embedded with style, you’re the detail that they can’t ignore. Raised high like a mighty flag; A banner of hope for the cause that fought and lost it all. Too much! It’s all been told, You’re the one fact they gleaned in an ocean full of pointless data. Carved up and left in the cold, You’re a moment to hold in an hour that should be best forgotten. This love is an open road; no destination to choose, it’s just a journey far beyond the door, Hearts locked in a chosen path; just future no past in a class that we can call our own. Crunched numbers; digitize the human factor; Disharmonic; a drowned out note in ceaseless chatter. Upriver; against the flow of ceaseless targets You’re the aim of the game, you’re the sane in the madness’ roar.

Holding On 04:13
North winds come blow, and we shall have snow Its blanket will cover the night; Nothing so cold as the ice in a soul locked away. Where once in your eyes I saw warmth add delight, I see darkness behind a glass pane; Nothing left after all of the years I remained. Holding on when there’s nothing to cling on to Holding tight when there’s nothing left in you. Stumbling for something to grasp, Pray against hope for one day it can last. When you arrived like a summer’s day, Like the Milky Way; a patchwork of wonder and light. Now you sigh, like the morning air, like you’re almost there; A dream not my real life. Holding on when there’s nothing to cling on to Holding tight when there’s nothing left in you. Stumbling for something to grasp, Pray against hope for one day it can last.

So long, so far but still too close for comfort. Time lost, high cost, you’re not cheap but you’re worth it. You send tremors through ground when you say my name, The stakes are too high but I’m playing your game, Too strong, dragged along by the strength of your current. You took the shot; I’m lying hit, I saw the trap from the moment that I walked in. You took me down, you’ve won the round, But I’m not out of the battle. You played me along, like a favourite song, But I’ve more notes that you could ever dare to hope to hit, You caught me out when I was so unaware. You caught me good on the bad side. Blue eyes, while lies, nothing taken as written. Aim straight, too late, I’m already smitten. You’re turning my head so I can’t see the way, Putting words in my mouth, until I’ve nothing to say. Hung on, too long, now you’ve got me bitten. I’m taking the time, I’ll set you high, I can climb but I’ll never get to reach the top, You can put me down but I’ll still be around, Cause you’ve this to remember, You played me along, like a favourite song, But I’ve more notes that you could ever dare to hope to hit, You caught me out when I was so unaware. You caught me good on the bad side. So long, so far but still too close for comfort. Time lost, high cost, you’re not cheap but you’re worth it.

My winter came to spring, casting light on the shadows, And with its song to sing, I threw open my window. Stay Morning to the sunset, Be the sun in my daytime and Stay Sunset to the morning, Be the moon, light my nights as My summer came again, bringing warmth, bringing laughter And in the endless days, I saw no time ever after. Stay Morning to the sunset, Be the sun in my daytime and Stay Sunset to the morning, Be the moon, light my nights evermore. The leaves began to fall, but the trees stood still proudly, And though the darkness falls, your light’s never-ending. Stay Morning to the sunset, Be the sun in my daytime and Stay Sunset to the morning, Be the moon, light my nights evermore.

Falling 05:36
And when the morning comes and the roll is called, Will I stand to be counted or find myself lost? Thinking ‘it’s ok, it’s all fine’. When I look within will I find me there Or will I open the door to find the cupboard bare? Thinking ‘it’s ok, it’s all fine’. When you’re searching for the meaning, when all you know has gone When the daylight turns to evening, Sets to flame all you know within; Burnt to shadows come creeping in, Falling gently, Falling bare, Falling gently, Darkness wraps its arms around, Silence steals every sound you make. When you’ve slogged your hardest and the ball’s been caught, When you’ve donned the armour and the wars been fought, Will you think ‘It’s Ok, it’s all fine’? When you’ve lost before you even begun, When you’ve bought the ticket after somebody won Will you think ‘It’s ok, it’s all fine?’ Falling gently, Falling bare, Falling gently, Darkness wraps its arms around, Silence steals every sound you make. Falling gently, Falling bare, Falling gently, Falling bare Darkness wraps its arms around, Silence steals every sound.

Though you hear every word I speak, It’s like distant sounds beneath your feet; It’s high ground with nowhere to turn. So I’ll show the words between the lines And maybe with some space and time You’ll come round and then you’ll learn That everything I say and do Is a way to try to break on through To the world you keep the keys unto Where everything make sense to you But all I give you, Is all the air I breathe. In the time between the days and hours, Where daylight sleeps and night devours You walk tall; you make it right. And the way you work doesn’t always go, In life you shine a light that shows The fault lines; the cracks between The lies we often call the truth The evidence that has no proof The polished glass that makes a roof That holds us down to all we do And all I can give you Is all the air I breathe. So shine my boy, Bright for all to see, Shine my boy, Find the light in me. That everything I say and do Is a way to try to break on through To the world you keep the keys unto Where everything make sense to you But all I can give you is all the air I breathe.

Freefall 05:44
Tongue tied, cluttered mind, four winds blown and three eyes blind, Pushed too high to keep eye on everything that passed us by, We take uneven slices of sky and bring our dreams awake. We turn off all from natures call, We crumble, mumble, stumble, fumble blink and stall, Freefalling from the tallest structure we could make. (Climbed so high he kissed the sky, but no-one taught him how to fly) Out on the edge of space, ready for our fall from grace, No sense of time or place I’m falling, I’m calling, I’m warning Free fall through it all, To land upon the ground again. Free fall through it all To find a halt to start again. Felt so proud in your ascent to the clouds, Now you’ve found in this town there’s no more ways than down, You’re heading for ground through the bitter wind of change. It’s an easy flight as you descend from the light, Just hold on tight to the dreams as you fight, Free falling from the tallest structure you could make. (Climbed so high he kissed the sky, but no-one taught him how to fly) Out on the edge of space, ready for my fall from grace, No sense of time or place I’m falling, I’m calling, I’m warning Free fall through it all, To land upon the ground again. Free fall through it all To find a halt to start again. Fall And if the wax should melt in the wings that I was sold Fall Will you be there to catch me and hold me safe within your soul? Fall From here I can see it all, so wide and empty and me so small, No sense of time or place I’m falling, I’m calling, I’m warning Out on the edge of space, ready for my fall from grace, No sense of time or place I’m falling, I’m calling, I’m warning Free fall through it all, To land upon the ground again. Free fall through it all To find a halt to start again.

Getaway 05:34
You’ve sat in the night for far too long, Wrapped in shadows, huddled ‘til the dawn But you can’t sing, ‘til you choose to write your song. You’ve got, got, got to get away, You’ve got to get away and fly. Tied down by the others in your sphere, Weighted down by demands only you can hear, Let go of all that useless fear, You’ve got, got, got to get away, You’ve got to get away and fly. (Tossed by the winds of fortune) Twisting in the net that caught you (Looking for the door you’d walk through) Try to find a way back home to (The golden glow you still remember) Where days still merge and time just slips away, Days still merge and time just slips away, I want to see you dance in light again, Get up and join the fight again, Smile wide and light the room again, You’ve got, got, got to get away, You’ve got to get away and fly. Twisting in the net that caught you (Looking for the door you’d walk through) Try to find a way back home to (The golden glow you still remember) Where days still merge and time just slips away, Days still merge and time just slips away, Take flight, soar again just like love Gain sight, see the picture form above, You’ll know you’re more than good enough. You’ve got, got, got to get away Stretch out, break the rusty chains, Take heart find yourself again, Throw back, let go of the pain. You’ve got, got, got to get away, You’ve got, got, got to get away and fly.

Echoes 05:19
I see your way of thinking When you don’t have a word to say, And feel your way of giving When you seem continents away. I’ll tell it to the Northern Skies, Fantasises and pretty lies, Then sell it like it’s going fast; A thing so good it just can’t last. I’ll feel the sound above, below At the edges where I just don’t know And shout to all the world outside: What once was in has been a lie! I’m feeling like an echo Of all I was before I’m feeling like an echo Swallowed by the roar So let me see your tunnel vision, Then blind me with that light, And give me your transmission Of the songs in me you write. Heaven is a Yorkshire lass Dragged up from the working class, Eyes of silver, heart of gold, Steeped in tales that can’t be told; A demon in an angel’s wings With a mind that blows and soul that sings, Who carves her name upon your heart And leaves you not a place to start. I’m feeling like an echo Of all I was before I’m feeling like an echo Swallowed by the roar So pull up your chair now, And tell me some truth, Give me your reasons And show me some proof. Can you hear me without listening? Can you feel me without sight? Can you give to me a meaning? Can you give to me some fight? I’m feeling like an echo Of all I was before I’m feeling like an echo Swallowed by the roar

Fire Spirit 03:32
She’s like the warm breeze in the fading light, the fading light, The safe caress as dying embers flicker at the fade of day, That holds you close and keeps you near. One passing moment she eclipses every second gone before. She opens up just like the summer’s night, the summer’s night She’s endless sky with nothing bound to any possibility, She’s like a tune upon the wind, So, so familiar but she leaves you chasing more that you could hold. Is this a love or just a flight of fancy? Sparks in her eyes that set alight the flame you know will scar But you can’t do a thing just feel the need to burn. Is this a tick or years in golden circles? Bound in green chains, within, without; you submit your reality She shines so bright she burns within your mind. She’s like the warm breeze in the fading light, the fading light…

Erase/error 06:41
Let's go walking, let's go driving, Get away from all behind us, Just keep moving ever forward; Leave be all that could remind us. You and I have come to a place where there's no more love and no more to hate, Just day by day; routine upon routine. There's no more passion there's no more fire, It's just statements, bills demands and reminders, It's a business now, not a king and his queen. So take me out and show me the places, Tell me all those tales and show me the faces Combining up to make a story shared. Give me signs, give me a reason Make me want to stay one extra season. Wipe the slate and make our futures clear. Let's go walking, let's go driving, Get away from all behind us, Just keep moving ever forward; Leave be all that could remind us. Leave the thought, burn all the pictures Tear the diary up, rewrite the pages, Take the memories out and start again from clean. Change my name, change the location, Change my address, change my occupation, Erase the trace of all that might have been. Clinging on to happier memory, Clinging on to a possibly maybe, Clinging on to a time that we once shared. Clinging on to happier memory, Clinging on to a possibly maybe, Clinging on to a time that we once shared. So take me out and show me the places, Tell me all those tales and show me the faces Combining up to make a story shared. Give me signs, give me a reason Make me want to stay one extra season. Wipe the slate and make our futures clear.

about

Perhaps more than any other, this collection has been a journey of discovery. All the other recordings I have ever made have involved me looking and searching; seeking and finding, but with this, there is a whole new element of self-reflection.

What’s new? In some ways nothing, in many ways everything! Being the drummer and part of the writing process with Hobson was something of a revelation for me; being able to shape the songs of Chris Ferguson; to have the opportunity to write with him; and to attempt to write to service the amazing voice of Kelly Hezelgrave on vocals was something of a game changer for me as both a writer and performer. I was surrounded by some very talented and creative musicians and, in order to contribute as well as I could, I really had to change and up my game at the same time as a writer. In doing so, I discovered something; I’d grown a little tired of having to try to write for my own voice. Writing for someone else was a complete liberation; I was no longer constrained by myself. That transferred to the arrangements as well; I was trying to write parts for other people to take, shape and better. Several songs that you’ll hear on this collection are the direct result of this.

Moving in with my partner and getting married also caused something of a shift. For the first time, I had a dedicated recording space, which meant I could work quickly as soon as the ideas were ready to go. This, combined with the acquisition of a digital drumset, meant that I could finally drum the songs as I had always wanted to, meaning that they could fully and totally sound as I wanted them to! This extra speed meant that ideas could also be discarded and redone quickly. A lot of what you are hearing has been done and done again and then done one more time to get it totally right. This lead to non-Hobson songs having a wonderfully layered sound, which was something I had started on Light At The End Of The Tunnel; this is probably the biggest set of arrangements I have ever had going!

My departure from Hobson was a reluctant one from all sides, but not an acrimonious one. It did leave me with several songs which I really couldn’t sing well, however. Having Emily Pickles working on Long Way Home on the previous recording (Light At The End Of The Tunnel) had sown a seed in me that I wanted to hear more female voice on my recordings anyway, this was apparent in some of the non-Hobson tunes I had put together as well, and so the missing piece of the puzzle was about to present itself. Kelly was tied to Hobson, and having her sing on all of these for me while working on other stuff with the band would have been out of order. Emily would have been great, but again real life got somewhat in the way. What next?

I’ve known Gemma Jarrett on and off for just over twenty years , we often worked together (although we never sang together) in High School stage productions. Her voice was distinctive, powerful and quirky, and, as you will hear, still is. She’d been out around the circuit from leaving school but, as far as I had known, had stopped. When I approached her, it turned out that she had been looking to get back into singing and thankfully she leaped on the idea of doing the tracks with great enthusiasm. It was a very easy process; we recorded most of her vocals in one productive session. One of the biggest surprises was how well our voices worked together, although I had an idea that they would. In many ways this makes this a recording twenty years in the making and I would like to thank her enormously for her invaluable contribution towards bringing these songs to life.

Musically, I wouldn’t say that this has been specifically been influenced by anything I have been listening to at any stage, this is just me layering up and adding and really considering what arrangements and sounds the songs suggest, and thoroughly loving it. I hope you do too!
