about

One of the few songs I have ever written while simply out walking, with a melody and backing that came entirely in the heard. Lyrics were also formed in that time and the whole process of transcribing took a good deal of time to get nailed to the sound in my head. We're looking at the difference between public and private perception of self here lyrically. I was delighted to be able to offer the chance of a hoedown violin part to my friend Hannah, who played with gusto, and of course Craig decided that a duel would have to be on!

lyrics

Whisper my name and I’ll tell my tale to you.
No badge of shame I have to keep in public view;
Just a story of rise and fall.

Say my name and I’ll believe the words you say,
Tell me its worth and I’ll stump up the price to pay
For the nights that come from the mornings before.

I’ll be leaving; coming back as someone new,
I’ll be leaving but always there beside of you.

Write my name and take the meaning to your heart.
No loss to gain is the perfect place to start
In the morning, when I come round again.

Call my name and I will lend a friendly ear.
You dull the pain that’s slowly ached away my years,
For your trouble it’s the least that I can do.

You won’t be leaving but I’ll take you far away,
You won’t be leaving if I don’t give you cause to stay.

So I pray to the ever be.

Echo my name ‘cause my head’s up in the clouds
Such dizzy heights when you’ve been buried underground
In the darkness-a lost cause that you’ve found.

All I believe in came and found me in the wind.
All I believe in found the place I could begin.
So I pray to the ever be.
