about

One of the later tracks to be completed, there was always something of a west coast influence in this and that comes across a little in the playing, we're talking late sixties influence in the construction and the backing vocals with a shade of The Who. I also wanted to ape my friend Dean O'Grady from Ringo and the Wolf in the playing of the lead guitar on this one. Lyrically, this came from a free writing session; just letting the pen go and do its thing. Icarus? Pride before a fall? Jim Morrison? The life lead before? It's one of them!

lyrics

Shot down; you fly like a bird of flame.
Dragged round; you're down on your luck again.
Bad town; the faces all seem the same.
Slammed round; your word's all you've got to show.
You got so high but now all you see is the low
You're three miles high with lifetime still to go.

You got back the time you took to get away.
Pain black the time you thought that light would fade.

You only ever wanted to kiss the sky
Never stopped to ask yourself the reason why,
Burning ember three miles high.

Burned so bright as the sun was getting low,
All ashes and drifting trails of smoke
Fading lights in a passing theatre show.
Sky high pride you're a slave to the gravity
Too shy to show your full majesty,
Towed line drawing up your tragedy.

Change tack on the vow you never made.
Paint the holes in the cracks of the portrait you portrayed.

You only ever wanted to kiss the sky
Never stopped to ask yourself the reason why,
Burning ember three miles high

You know it's real life; it's not your fantasy
Because your day's less sense than all your wildest dreams.

You only ever wanted to kiss the sky
Never stopped to ask yourself the reason why,
Burning ember three miles high
