This is the continuation of a structural idea I'd begun to follow during the 'Uneven Slices' period in songs such as 'Freefall' and 'Falling'. There's an element of a Nick Drake feel in here, but it's also a continuance of the more stripped back I wanting more generally on the tracks.
Lyrically, this is the last in the story before the attack itself and certainly while it's happening, things do happen. I didn't see my life flash before my eyes, I questioned its validity. We are all guilty of having embellished our lives and achievements, in many ways to reassure ourselves; stories of our past, our versions of events are usually more tainted than we like to realise. One thing I thought a lot during the moments from when I was told I was having a heart attack to when I fully came round after the procedure was how much the facts of my life would bear up to whatever story I or anyone else had concocted.
lyrics
In a sea of memories and moments,
It seems like it never got broken,
All soft glittering and golden
It shines; beauty beholden.
Time lines, distant dates,
Chance to measure out your fate in moments.
Time lies, seldom straight,
Casts a shadow on the words
Spoken that you’ve chosen not to hear.
In days, you edit your yesteryears;
Wearing down sandstone with all that you think gleams.
You share and then when it comes undone,
You swear your truth is the only one.
Time lines, distant dates;
Chance to measure out your fate in moments.
Time lies, seldom straight,
Casts a shadow on the words
Spoken, but you’ve chosen not to hear.
Days gone by,
Memories lie,
Time flies by,
But tears you cry,
Are dulled by the weight of the years.
Time lines, distant dates,
Chance to measure out your fate.
Time lies, seldom straight,
Casts a shadow on the pain
You’ve forgotten just how to feel.
